The World in Color
The late 40's to early 50's brought the world a new form of entertainment: sitcoms. Unless you were born in the past 20 years, you are bound to have seen an older sitcom. One of my personal favorites was the show "I Love Lucy", a sitcom that followed the life and story of Lucy and Ricky Ricardo. Originally produced in 1951, it was filmed in black-and-white until 1954, when the first episode in color aired.
Let's imagine for a moment, however, what would life be like if things were different. What if life really looked like a "I Love Lucy" episode? What if we had no colors outside of black, grey, and white? What if we had constant gray skies, black grass, and white trees?
If you find yourself saying, "I don't want to live in a world like that!", you aren't alone. Colors make the world beautiful. Colors make the world interesting. Colors are known to have a major affect on people's moods. Colors are powerful.
With colors having such prominent importance in our lives, you might be wondering how to use the power of color in your own home. In this article, we are going to dig into the effect certain colors have on your brain, and what experts recommend you paint each room in your home.
Color + Mind = Effect
Blue: Blue is by far my favorite color, and it is found everywhere. Blue is the most popular color in the world, and blue is known to cause feelings of calmness, stability, and serenity. The color blue can be used to lower pulse rate and body temperature as well.
Yellow: When I think of the color yellow, I often associate it with the sun. However, yellow is a color that can cause a different range of emotions. When using yellow in your home, one thing to consider is that yellow is the most fatiguing color on the eye. However, yellow has been shown to increase metabolism. Another thing to consider is that yellow has been shown to affect people’s moods negatively as well. Babies are more likely to cry in yellow rooms and people are more likely to get angry in yellow rooms.
Red: Ah Red, the color of love. Believe it or not, despite its associating with passion, romance, and love, red actually has quite the negative effect on the brain. How so? Well to start, red is a color used in modern day to symbolize danger (red lights, stop signs, sirens). Red has been shown to cause elevated heart rate, enhanced metabolism, and increased heart and respiration rate.
Pink: Pink is red’s cousin, but they are absolutely nothing alike. Pink is a cheerful color. Pink is shown to have a initial calming affect. Pink is described to bring out creativity, euphoria, a refreshing feeling.

So now that we know the affects that certain colors have on the human brain, how can we apply that practically into our lives? Here’s what experts recommend:
Busy Spaces: Pink ~ Think offices, kid’s play rooms, or anywhere where a lot of activity happens. With pinks natural calming and refreshing affect, experts say it is a perfect pick for the busy areas in your home.
Kitchens: Yellow ~ I know, my description of the color yellow may have scared you off. But don’t write off the color just yet. With yellow’s affect on the human metabolism, how could you not choose it for your kitchen?
Bedrooms: Blue ~ I’m sure no one is surprised by this one, but yes, experts recommend you paint your bedroom blue, specifically deep blue. With it’s ability to give you a feeling of calmness and serenity, painting your bedroom blue will give you a sense of safety and security in your bedroom.
Gyms: Red ~ Despite red’s reputation, a study done showed that red can actually cause a boost in physical performance. This makes it a #1 pick for gyms and exercise rooms.
